Meeting of Two Worlds: The Story of Sunan Jati and Princess Sun #1

Chapter 1

Journey to a Faraway Land

By: Ahmada45

The sea wind blew hard in the harbor of the Sultanate that morning. A large ship decorated with dragon and garuda carvings prepared to sail the ocean. At the edge of the dock, Sunan Jati stood tall wearing a long white robe, a turban neatly wrapped around his head. His face radiated serenity, although his eyes implied unwavering determination. Around him, his followers were busy loading supplies onto the ship.

“This is a long journey, Kanjeng Sunan,” said Ki Gede Wirya, one of his most loyal students. “This vast ocean is full of storms and challenges. Do we really have to do it?”

Sunan smiled, patting Ki Gede’s shoulder gently. “Ki Gede, every great journey requires sacrifice. If we want to convey a message of peace, we must be willing to cross the ocean. Didn’t the Prophet also teach us to spread goodness to all corners of the earth?”

Ki Gede nodded, although his face still looked anxious. They set off not only carrying Islamic teachings, but also the hope of establishing friendly relations between the archipelago and the Chinese Empire. Sunan knew that this task was not just diplomacy, but also a spiritual mission that involved his whole body and soul.

First Day at Sea

When the ship's sails were opened, the wind immediately carried them away from the northern coast of Jawadwipa Island. Slowly, the land disappeared from sight. The sea stretched wide, blue and limitless. The ship's crew was busy with their respective tasks, while Sunan Jati sat on the deck, looking at the horizon.

"Are you worried, Kanjeng Sunan?" asked Ki Gede who approached him.

"No, Ki Gede," answered Sunan Jati calmly. "But I am contemplating what we will face there. The Chinese Empire is a great country, with an advanced civilization. We must carry ourselves humbly, but still show the greatness of Islamic teachings."

Their conversation stopped when suddenly the sea wind turned stronger. The waves began to rock the ship. The crew shouted orders to strengthen the sail ropes. Some of Sunan’s followers who were not yet accustomed to the sea began to turn pale and vomit in the corner of the ship.

“This storm is an initial test,” Sunan muttered as he gripped the side of the ship tightly. In his heart, he prayed that their journey would be protected by God.

Encounter with Pirates

On the fifth day of the journey, as they entered deeper waters, a strange ship appeared in the distance. The ship approached at high speed, a black flag flying at the top of its mast.

“Pirates!” shouted one of the crew members, causing everyone to panic.

“Calm down!” ordered Sunan in a voice that remained calm but firm. “No one moves without orders.”

The pirate ship soon approached, and several armed men jumped onto their ship. The leader of the pirates, a large man with a scar on his face, stepped forward arrogantly.

“We need supplies and valuables!” he shouted.

Sunan Jati stepped forward fearlessly. “Brother, why did you choose this path? Aren’t you worried about retribution in the afterlife?”

The man laughed loudly. “What do I care about the afterlife? I only need food and gold.”

Sunan approached him slowly. “If you need food, we are willing to share. But if you take it by force, you will only add sin to your shoulders.”

Sunan’s words made the man fall silent. His harsh eyes began to soften. “You speak like a wise man,” he said finally. “I will accept your food, but I will not touch your gold.”

Sunan nodded. They gave some of the supplies to the pirate, who then left without harming anyone. The incident became a lesson for everyone on the ship about the power of words and wisdom.

Arriving in China

After weeks at sea, they finally saw the Chinese mainland. Green mountains towered in the distance, while small fishing boats bobbed near the harbor. They were greeted by imperial officials who had received letters from the Archipelago earlier.

“Welcome to our country,” said one of the officials who spoke fluent Malay. “Our emperor has heard of your wisdom, and he is very interested in meeting you.”

Sunan smiled and bowed respectfully. “Thank you for this warm welcome. We come bearing a message of peace from the archipelago.”

Along the way to the palace, Sunan and his entourage were treated to a stunning view. The wide streets were decorated with cherry blossom trees in bloom, and a magnificent palace with a golden roof towered at the end of the road. Sunan felt both awe and humility before the greatness of this civilization.

When they arrived at the palace, they were invited into a large hall filled with colored lanterns red and gold. Emperor Hong, wearing a dragon robe, sat on a high throne with a friendly smile. Beside him, a beautiful woman in imperial regalia stood gracefully.

“We have heard much about your wisdom, Sunan of Java,” said Emperor Hong. “We wish to hear firsthand what makes your teachings so special.”

Sunan smiled and bowed respectfully. “Your Majesty, these teachings are simple. Islam teaches peace, compassion, and justice. We come to bring friendship, not conflict.”

The Emperor nodded with a serious face. “We wish to learn more. However, we also wish to ensure that your visit brings benefits to our people.”

The dialogue between Sunan Jati and Emperor Hong became the beginning of a long and meaningful relationship between the Nusantara and the Chinese Empire.

Closing Part 1

Sunan Jati’s journey to China was not only a physical journey, but also a spiritual journey full of lessons. Every challenge they faced at sea, every encounter with foreigners, and every step on Chinese soil was proof of greatness of heart and steadfastness of faith.

Amidst cultural and linguistic differences, Sunan Jati proved that the message of peace can transcend all boundaries. And in this faraway land, he began to plant the seeds of harmony that will be remembered for all time.
